Cockney e` un modo di parlare, un dialetto londinese, uno slang a rima, originario dell`Est End di Londra. La parola Slang ha origine come abbreviazione di Secret Language. Il termine cockney o anche cock`s egg, si pensa abbia origine nel quattordicesimo secolo quando veniva attribuito con disprezzo dalla gente di campagna ai nativi di Londra che non facevano un lavoro manuale, ma usavano la loro intelligenza per mantenersi.
La tradizione dice che solo chi fosse nato nell`area intorno a St.Mary Le Bow (una chiesa costruita tra il 1671-1680 e una delle tante chiese costruite da Wren dopo il Grande Incendio raffigurata nella foto) entro una distanza che poteva sentire il suono delle sue campane, era un vero londinese o cockney. Lo slang si diffuse invece intorno al 1850, in the london underworld, quando la gente incomincio` a parlare in codice per confondere la polizia e i ficcanaso.
Lo slang usa delle parole sostitutive, in genere due, come codice per un`altra parola, in genere la seconda fa la rima con la parola intesa
