Nonostante l'emergenza covid che non accenna a rallentare negli USA, la 37° edizione degli MTV VMA si terrà il 30 Agosto 2020, presso il Barclays Center di Brooklyn a New York, con esibizioni live trasmesse da varie parti della città.
Quest'anno ad ottenere il maggior numero di nominations (ben 9) sono state Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande con Rain On Me, estratta dall'ultimo album della Germanotta, Chromatica, che continua a macinare numeri da capogiro nonostante la promozione nulla.
Oltre alle due italoamericane, anche Billie Eilish e The Weeknd sono andati molto bene, con sei nomination ciascuno. Tutti e tre si giocheranno l'ambito "Video of the year", mentre è ancora incerto a chi andrà il "Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award", un premio per coronare l'impegno nell'elaborazione dei video musicali, tali da essere rimasti all'interno della cultura popolare. Tra gli ultimi vincitori troviamo Missy Elliott, Jennifer Lopez, Pink, Rihanna, Kanye West, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears.
Naturalmente non sono mancate le solite polemiche, soprattutto riguardo alla mancanza di nominations importanti per artisti come Dua Lipa, Harry Styles e Selena Gomez, che stanno ottenendo un bel successo con i loro ultimi progetti musicali.
Per votare è necessario accedere al sito di mtv ed effettuare il login con un account - tramite google, twitter o anche con una semplice email. Saranno disponibili 20 voti per categoria da distribuire ai vari artisti nominati, e sarà possibile effettuare più votazioni fino all'evento di fine Agosto.

Io tifo molto per Gaga ed Ariana: la canzone ed il video sono una vera bomba, e Chromatica è un album dance/pop molto ben fatto. Spero che con tutte queste nominations finalmente si degnino di darci un'esibizione live per questa era musicale, che a causa del covid continua ad essere sottotono (Il primo singolo, "Stupid Love", è uscito il 28 Febbraio, ma in tutti questi mesi non ha neanche cantato una versione unplugged  ).
Oltre a loro due, spero che anche i Coldplay ed Alicia Keys vincano nelle loro categorie (Best Rock & Best R&B), così come Megan Thee Stallion, che con Savage, soprattutto in seguito al remix con Beyoncé, ha avuto un successo enorme negli USA. Il premio di categoria, però, penso che andrà a Roddy Rich, che è rimasto in vetta per undici settimane consecutive nella Billboard Hot 100.
